Many opportunities currently exist in the field of health occupations, as all states in our nation are experiencing a significant shortage in healthcare providers.  Even the St. John Valley region is coping with a lack of CNA's, RN's and other critical caregivers, which translates into available jobs with strong salaries for those interested.  The health occupations program at the St. John Valley Technology Center provides students with exposure to the opportunities that the healthcare field affords.  Successful completion of each facet of this program earns students various industry certifications, along with four college credits in the Universtiy of Maine at Fort Kent's NUR200 course (3 credits) plus NUR230 lab (1 credit).

Health Occupations I students may earn national certifications in CPR and First Aid via the American Red Cross or American Heart Association, and may also receive State of Maine Nursing Assistant certification.  They leave the first year with a portfolio, an understanding of ethics and confidentiality needed in the medical field, and with potential employment in area facilities.

Health Occupations II students may receive certifications in American Red Cross Animal/Pet First Aid & CPR, along with certification as a State of Maine Personal Support Specialist (PSS).  All students who have successfully passed, completed, and received certifications for both Health Occupations I and II qualify for the four college credits earned through our dual enrollment agreement with the University of Maine at Fort Kent.

Enrollment is open to both males and females and is limited to 12 per session.  Students interested in specialized curriculum will be interviewed.  A complete physical is required; it will state that the student is in good health and able to do CNA work.  Students will need proof of immunizations.

Students in the Health Occupations program may choose to participate in the HOSA student organization:  www.hosa.org
